The app
What does DiskMate do?
It scans your Mac and shows you where the space went, by folder, by kind and by age. Then it helps you clear what you don't need: caches, build leftovers, duplicates, old downloads and apps you no longer use.
Which Macs does it run on?
Macs with Apple silicon (M1 or newer) running macOS 14 Sonoma or later. There's no Intel or Windows version right now.
Can I scan an external drive?
Yes. Choose any folder or mounted drive and DiskMate scans it the same way it scans your home folder.
How fast is it?
The first scan walks every file, so it depends on how many you have. After that, DiskMate reopens the last scan instantly and only re-reads the folders that changed.
Why does it ask for Full Disk Access?
macOS hides some folders, like Mail and parts of ~/Library, from apps unless you allow it. Without access DiskMate still works, but some sizes will be incomplete. It tells you when that's the case and opens the right Settings pane.
Safety & privacy
Could I delete something I need?
DiskMate never deletes anything on its own. You tick what goes, and it moves to the Trash, where you can restore it. The one exception is emptying the Trash itself, which is clearly labelled 'Deletes for good'.
Does it send anything off my Mac?
No. Scanning, hashing and everything else happens on your Mac. There's no account, no analytics and no file names sent anywhere.
How does it know two files are duplicates?
It groups files by size, then compares their SHA-256 hashes. Only true byte-for-byte copies are shown.

How do I get the app after paying?
Checkout emails you a download link straight away. Open the .dmg and drag DiskMate into Applications.
macOS warns me the first time I open it. Is that normal?
Yes, for apps downloaded outside the App Store. Open System Settings → Privacy & Security, scroll down and click 'Open Anyway'. You only do it once. The install notes in the .dmg walk you through it.
