What you get

Your disk by age

How much space was last changed in the past week, past month, past six months, past year, and more than a year ago.

Big and untouched

Files over 50 MB that haven't changed in over a year, biggest first. Old exports, virtual machines and archives tend to live here.

Instant search

DiskMate indexes the scan, so search doesn't read the disk again. Results appear as you type.

Filter by size

Any size, over 1 MB, over 100 MB or over 1 GB.

Filter by age

Changed in the past week, month or year, or older than a year.

Files or folders

Search files, folders or both, sort the results, and include hidden and system files when you need them.

How it works

  1. 1Scan

Scan your home folder or a drive. Every file's size and last change date is recorded.

  2. 2Look

Open Old files to see your disk by age and the big untouched list, or search for anything over 1 GB.

  3. 3Decide

Reveal a file in Finder or Quick Look it. Add what you don't need to Cleanup, and it goes to the Trash when you clean.

Changed your mind? Every step can be undone.

Open the Trash, select what you want and choose Put Back. It returns to the exact folder it came from. Only emptying the Trash deletes for good, and DiskMate labels that button clearly.

Nothing disappears by surprise

  • Old files only lists. It never selects anything for removal on its own.
  • Quick Look and Reveal in Finder let you check a file before you decide.
  • Anything you remove goes to the Trash, so you can put it back.

Prefer to do it by hand?

In Finder, press ⌘F, click This Mac, choose Kind → Other → File Size and set it to greater than 1 GB. Storage settings also lists large files: click ⓘ next to Documents and open the Large Files tab.

In Terminal, this lists files over 1 GB in your home folder:

Terminal
$ find ~ -type f -size +1G -exec ls -lh {} + 2>/dev/null | sort -k5 -h
Read-only. Takes a while on a large home folder.

Questions

How do I find large files on a Mac?+

In DiskMate, search with the Over 1 GB size filter, or open the Space page's Largest view. Without an app, use Finder's search with a File Size rule, or Storage settings → Documents → Large Files.

How do I find files I haven't used in a long time?+

DiskMate's Old files page lists files over 50 MB that haven't changed in more than a year, biggest first. Search also has an Older than a year filter for files of any size.

What counts as big and untouched?+

A file of 50 MB or more whose last change was over a year ago. These are usually old exports, downloads, archives and virtual machines.

Does DiskMate search the disk every time I type?+

No. DiskMate indexes the scan once, so search results come back as you type without reading the disk again.

Will DiskMate delete old files automatically?+

No. Old files and Search only list files. You decide what to add to Cleanup, and removed files go to the Trash.
